PRESENTATION OUTLINE

TEAM CARR @ IRONMAN CANADA

Ironman Canada was one of the highlights of our summer! Here's a recap of our trip.

PACK UP THE RIG

When you are driving across the Arizona desert 3 days before the race, and it's super windy, and you hear a terrible noise and look up at the rearview mirror to see your husband's race bike blowing down the highway like a tumbleweed, that is really NOT GOOD.

Yeah, that happened.

Incidentally, the bike (a titanium Serotta) was pretty much fine (once a whole bunch of components had been tweaked and replaced), and Scot ended up finishing 4th in his age group and qualifying for Kona. But still: Bike inside the car.

ANJOU BAKERY

Anjou Bakery in Cashmere, WA is so crazy good we plan our trips around it. In fact, we would consider driving all the way from Seattle just for the world's best tuna sandwiches (killer secret ingredient: preserved lemon) on just-baked bread, followed by coconut macaroons and cappuccinos.

Hot tip: If you're not going to make it before they close for the day, you can call ahead and they will have your order ready in a special after-hours pickup box.

BORDER CROSSING

The background on this is that the last time we went to Canada, in April, we realized the night before we left that one of our passports was expired. (I won't name names.) We were totally sweating both border crossings, but--miracle of miracles--they didn't notice on the way in and they were cool on the way back out. When the nice guy said "Welcome home," I almost jumped out of the car and hugged him.

5K FUN RUN

This was our kids' first 5K run! Tate (7) had to walk part of the way, but he finished strong. Zoë (9) had to tough it out with a stitch in her side. At the very end I told her she could sprint if she wanted, and she took off like a jackrabbit--I couldn't catch up to her!

CHOCOLATE PUDDING

We hit Boston Pizza, which had been recommended by some nice folks we met. The wait was very, very long and the pizza mediocre, but the gummy worms in chocolate pudding were a big hit.

HOLY CRAP

That's a lot of bikes

FRESH TAPE ON THE INJURY

The injury? Broken ribs from a big crash in the Colorado mountains a couple of months prior.

The Eh Chalet? A mostly unfurnished house we rented. It had some interesting decorative touches.

WINE TASTING

I'd never heard much about BC wine, but it's a great scene! We had fun driving around and checking out the vineyards.

BEACH SOCCER

Zoë schooled the boys, by the way.

This meal at "Local " in Summerland was hands down the best food I've ever had in Canada. The beer sampler was pretty excellent, too.

IS KEY

Anyone who knows Scot well knows that beer is an essential part of his hydration and race recovery strategy. It just works for him.

QUICK SWIM

Scot always does a mini tri the day before the race---short swim, bike, run. We went down to hang out with him.

FANCY BIKE

It was actually kind of chilly in the shade, but T & Z took great pride in guarding Daddy's bike while he was swimming and running.

TEAM TATTOOS

I had one, too!

HELP DADDY

HOLY CRAP

HIT THE BEACH

We found this fantastic little provincial park, just south of Summerland. We went two days in a row for the gorgeous view and sandy beach.

SPAGHETTI CARBONARA

Remember the part about the Eh Chalet being mostly unfurnished? We got all the fixings for a pre-race spaghetti carbonara, only to find....no pasta pot. I had to "cook" it in the sink by pouring boiling water on it. Definitely could have used a food stylist.

IT'S GO TIME

UP AT DAWN

The first Ironman start attended by our whole family! The kids were awesome about getting up early and getting down there to watch.

This scene is pretty amazing. They don't do waves; everybody just goes for it.

After Scot headed out on the bike, we hit Starbucks and had fun making some cool signs.

We also found a dollar store with a towering display of sidewalk chalk, so we had fun creating some personalized messages on the course.

We won't dwell on the fact that Scot didn't actually *see* our messages during the race. It was fun anyway.

Untitled Slide

A nice Italian guy bought the kids ice cream from the Penticton Peach because they shared their sidewalk chalk. Good stuff.

Two observations about the giant floats that marked the swim course:

1. Schwimmflugel is fun to say.
2. Z's KEXP t-shirt is practically camouflage in front of the schwimmflugels.

CHILL OUT

This is such a great spot in downtown Penticton! We hung out and watched the koi and enjoyed the sunshine.

WINE TASTING

112 MILES

Untitled Slide

This is apparently a hugely popular Penticton tradition, and we saw people doing it---buy cheap beer, float down the river, get in a van, go back to the start, repeat. With all these badass triathletes in town, I was pretty entertained by the contrast.

(NEXT TIME)

We had a great spot to see Scot head out on the run. He came right by for a high-five and a kiss....AND to ask if I had any Advil, since the ribs were acting up. I didn't.

A couple minutes after he passed by, a lady nearby gave me some, so I did a "Run Lola Run" sprint to try to get it to him, but couldn't catch him.

We then piled in the car and tried to catch him that way, but the roads were too blocked off, so that didn't work, either. But we TRIED!

CHEER ON SISTER MADONNA

How cool is this? The lady is 82, people! 82!!!!!

HIGH FIVE

A great moment!

FREE PIZZA

One more trip through the Japanese Garden on the way to the car--the sunset was spectacular.

BURGERS AND BEERS

We hit Burger 54 a couple of times while we were there, and it didn't disappoint.

GET SOME SHUTEYE

Tate crashed out on the couch.

Hey, it's hard work being a spectator, too.

MAYBE SOMEDAY...
