What does it mean to be a Witness?
An effective witness has a message and has been changed themselves by the content of that message.
If the Holy Spirit doesn't go before us and empower us then we might as well stay home.
Festivals were used to commemorate special times in Israel's Redemptive History:
“Then the channels of the sea were seen; the foundations of the world were laid bare, at the rebuke of the Lord, at the blast of the breath of his nostrils.”
2 Samuel 22:16
"I am the God of your father, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob." And Moses hid his face, for he was afraid to look at God.”
Exodus 3:1-6
“"I baptize you with water for repentance, but he who is coming after me is mightier than I, whose sandals I am not worthy to carry. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire.”
Matthew 3:11
Instead of everyone going out in confusion, everyone would go back to their hometown with the clarity of the Good News.
And it shall come to pass afterward, that I will pour out my Spirit on all flesh; your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, your old men shall dream dreams, and your young men shall see visions. Even on the male and female servants in those days I will pour out my Spirit.
Joel 28:32
And it shall come to pass afterward, that I will pour out my Spirit on all flesh; your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, your old men shall dream dreams, and your young men shall see visions. Even on the male and female servants in those days I will pour out my Spirit.
Joel 28:32
“God’s Spirit fuels God’s mission
by empowering
weak people.”
Mohler, Jr
Do we give way to foolish human explanations to spiritual acts of God?
What does it mean to be baptized or filled with the Spirit?
“I will sprinkle clean water on you, and you shall be clean from all your uncleannesses, and from all your idols I will cleanse you. And I will give you a new heart, and a new spirit I will put within you. And I will remove the heart of stone from your flesh and give you a heart of flesh. And I will put my Spirit within you, and cause you to walk in my statutes and be careful to obey my rules.”
Ezekiel 36:25-27
“Jesus answered him, "Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born again he cannot see the kingdom of God."
Jesus answered, "Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God.”
John 3:3,5
But when the goodness and loving kindness of God our Savior appeared, he saved us, not because of works done by us in righteousness, but according to his own mercy, by the washing of regeneration and renewal of the Holy Spirit, whom he poured out on us richly through Jesus Christ our Savior, so that being justified by his grace we might become heirs according to the hope of eternal life.”
Titus 3:3-7
Therefore I want you to understand that no one speaking in the Spirit of God ever says "Jesus is accursed!" and no one can say "Jesus is Lord" except in the Holy Spirit.”
1 Corinthians 12:1-3
“"If you love me, you will keep my commandments. And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Helper, to be with you forever, even the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees him nor knows him. You know him, for he dwells with you and will be in you.”
John 14:15-17
If we are Christs we should experience the Holy Spirit in our lives through things like obedience, fruitfulness (in witnessing), receiving and understanding Jesus teaching and promises, through unity in Christ, prayer and interceding for others, bringing about lasting change in our attitudes, desires, and actions.
Do I have to speak in tongues to prove that I am a Christian?
The call for response is not “repent and speak in tongues” but “repent and be baptized.”
Just because there are 4 events where people are converted and speak in tongues does not mean this is the standard. There are 9 other occurrences where people are converted but the process of then speaking in tongues has no reference.
Paul makes a point to say in 1 Corinthians 12:30 to say that not all speak in tongues because he wants to address the propensity of the church (then and today) to ostracise those who do not appear to have certain gifts of the Spirit that we value as “better.”
The Holy Spirit still works in equipping the body for specific seasons and specific times and specific circumstance in order to empower our witness to the world. This may include something like being gifted in speaking other languages but the Holy Spirit cannot be limited to merely what our minds are willing to allow in our wisdom.
