EPILEPSY

EPILEPSY

  • A neurological disorder marked by
  • Sudden recurrent episodes of
  • Sensory disturbance, loss of consciousness
  • Or convulsions, associated with abnormal
  • Electrical activity in the brain.

SYMPTOMS: 3 DIFFERENT TYPES OF SEIZURES

  • Generalized Seizures:
  • Crying or whimpering during a seizure
  • Rhythmic movements that slow before stopping
  • Loss of urine and confusion
  • Typically eyes are open

PARTIAL OR FOCAL SEIZURES

  • Only affects half of the brain
  • Depending on what part of the brain it is effecting
  • Depends on what part of your body is having
  • The seizure.
  • Example: your hand

PETIT MAL SEIZURES

  • Impairment of consciousness
  • Blank staring
  • Repetitive blinking and small movements
  • Can occur more then once a day

DIAGNOSIS TESTS

  • EEG - tracks electrical signals from the brain
  • Blood testing
  • PET Scan - locating what part of the brain is having seizures
  • Spinal tap/lumbar puncture - removing CSF

CAUSES OF EPILEPSY

  • Head injury at all ages
  • Low oxygen during birth
  • Brain tumors or strokes
  • Infections in the meninges or encelphatitis
  • Genetic conditions - tuberousclerosis

1 IN EVERY 26 PEOPLE WILL GET EPILEPSY

Every year 48 out of 100,000 people will get epilepsy

TREATMENTS

  • No cure
  • Only medications for seizures
