HUNTINGTONS DISEASE

DIAGNOSIS

  • Physical exam
  • Family history
  • Nervous system exam
  • MRI scans, PET scans
  • Genetic testing

SYMPTOMS

  • Behavioral disturbances
  • Hallucinations
  • Irritability & paranoia
  • Moodiness
  • Restlessness or fidgeting

SYMPTOMS: ABNORMAL MOVEMENTS

  • Facial movements, grimaces
  • Head turning to shift eye position
  • Wild jerking movements
  • Uncontrolled movements
  • Unsteady gait

TREATMENTS

  • No cure
  • Continues to get worse
  • Slow symptoms
  • Help function for as long as possible

PROGNOSIS

  • Worse over time
  • Usually die within 15 to 20 years
  • Number of CAG repeats

CAG REPEATS

  • Determines how bad symptoms will be
  • Less CAG, affected at older age
  • More CAG, affected at younger age

PREVENTION

  • Genetic counseling
