CELL-FIES

Cells are made of organelles

We have big organs in our body such as our heart, lungs, brain, liver, stomach and then we have...

And then we have organelles...French for "little" organs" and that is the inside parts of cells

There are 2 main types of cells

Plant and Animal

First things first

  • Cell membrane - surrounds the plant and animal cell. It acts like a door allowing in FOOD, WATER, and OXYGEN and out the door goes CELL WASTE

Plant cells have a CELL WALL that protects the cell and gives the plant its shape

Chloroplast

found only in the plant cell

They are the producers for the plant. They convert the sun's energy into useful sugars for the plant (aka photosynthesis)

Mitochondria

The powerhouse of the cell

Mitochondria act like the digestive system - takes in nutrients, breaks them down, and provides energy

VACUOLE

"closet" of the cell

Vacuoles are big storage bubbles that hold food, water and waste. They are large in the plant cell.

Yikes!  What are these words!

There are 2 types

Rough and Smooth E.R.

Rough E.R. has ribosomes attached and smooth E. R. doesn't

This organelle is making fats (lipids) and proteins and gets packaged into sacs and delivered to our next organelle...

GOLGI BODY OR GOLGI APPARATUS

It sorts the cellular mail and delivers as needed

golgis are

UPS/Fed ex of the cell

This organelle modifies the proteins and fats and modifies them and turns some of them into carbs and ships them to the cell in vesicles.

Ribosomes

The "meat" of the cell

Ribosomes are the protein builders and producers

Nuclear Membrane

Surrounds and protects the nucleus

NUCLEUS

THE "BRAIN" OF THE CELL

Nucleus - regulates all the cells activities which can include growth, cell replication and functions

If it happens in the cell, chances are the nucleus knows about it.

NUCLEOLUS

IN THE SIMPLEST TERMS IT TRANSCRIBES DNA

Chromosomes

You are what you are

Chromosomes are the things that make organisms what they are.

They carry all the info for...

  • cell growth
  • the cell to thrive
  • the cell to reproduce

Lysosome

the garbage disposal of the cell

The purpose of the lysosome is to digest things. They might be used to digest food or break down the cell when it dies.

Finally...

Cytoplasm

Cytoplasm is the fluid that fills a cell. The organelles are suspended in it.

DNA

deoxaribonuclecic acid

DNA is in the chromosomes. DNA makes your specifically who you are through genetic traits or genes.

More on DNA later

It will be edible too
