Where?

formed underground/inside earth

How?

from cooled MAGMA

  • Coarse texture (grains are large)

Example:
granite
gabbro

Extrusive

How and where are they formed?

Where: on the surface of earth

How:

cooled LAVA (on surface of earth)

Characteristics

small, tiny crystals create a fine texture

Or...very porous or glassy

No visible evidence of crystals because of quick cooling

Examples

  • Basalt
  • Pumice
  • Obsidian

Two Color Types

  • Felsic - light-colored rocks full of K, Al, Si and, Na.
  • Mafic - dark-colored rocks full of Ca, Fe and Mg
