  • How can we create a school culture that promotes technology for girls?

  • Needed: teachers to encourage girls in math, science, and technology.
  • The secrets to increasing females in technology: the secret to increasing females in technology is not “fix” the girls but to make the technology classroom and profession more appealing to and welcoming of girls.

Data Collection

  • View STEM enrollment data from 6th-12th grades
  • Survey girls who didn't choose the class
  • Survey girls who chose the class

The Results

The Numbers

  • Girls who took both STEM I and STEM II in middle school were most likely to continue taking STEM in high school.
  • 15 girls took both classes in middle school.
  • 11 girls took the high school course.
  • 9 girls took STEM I in MS only 1 of these continued in STEM.
  • Girls represented 28% of the middle school STEM I class but only 14% of the STEM II class.

Girls Who Didn't Choose STEM

  • Limited view of CS jobs
  • Believe STEM is not creative
  • Intimidated by technology
  • Don't belive there are many jobs for women

  • Class dominated by boys
  • No female role models
