Jessica Rodrigues
Jessica Rodrigues is a research assistant at the Center for Improving and Learning of Fractions. Her research consists of implementing and evaluating interventions for struggling math students. She was the coauthor of a text that has been approved for publication entitled " Developmental pathways to fraction learning."

1. How do you personalize instruction for those who need it most?
"I use small group instruction everyday and also offer tutorials after school for those who need additional help."
2. What strategies do you use to decide if a lesson has met its objective? "I use a quick informal assessment at the end of my mini-lesson to see who is still struggling. I keep my small groups flexible so I can immediately pull students to support their weaknesses."
3. How do you make math applicable and interesting for the students?
"I try to bring in real world scenarios whenever possible." "When we discuss profit and loss, the students create their own business."
4. Are there any specific programs you would like to see implemented for struggling learners?
" I would love any type of adaptive program that students can use at school and home that works on their level and weaknesses."
5. Do you focus more on strengths or weaknesses?
"Weaknesses are a priority due to STAAR."
The math lesson from the video is exemplary for many reasons. The teacher implements Whole Brain teaching elements flawlessly. The students are actively engaged and communicating with their peers often. The teacher is using a variety of teaching strategies to reach all learners. She grabbed the students' interests by telling the story of "Joe" and making it relevant to their age and experiences.
