Medical termination of pregnancy (non-surgical or medical abortion) is the most modern way to resolve a delicate issue in the early stages without surgical intervention. For an abortifacient effect, special drugs from the group of antigestagens and prostaglandin analogues are used. Also you can mifepristone buy. The technique allows, with minimal risk to a woman’s reproductive health, to forget about an unplanned pregnancy and is gradually gaining recognition throughout the world. This method is used exclusively in the early stages, namely, no later than 5-6 weeks according to the results of transvaginal ultrasound (or 42 days of absence of menstruation).

According to the WHO classification, medical abortion is a safe abortion technology.

The procedure is performed in 3 appointments: in the first, the doctor performs the necessary examination and explains to the woman all the risks associated with terminating the pregnancy. During the second visit, the patient is given drugs of the antiprogestagen group; during the third, the patient takes prostaglandin analogues, which provide muscle contractions, as a result of which the fertilized egg is spontaneously expelled from the uterine cavity and an artificial miscarriage occurs. The effectiveness of the method ranges from 95 to 98.2%.

ADVANTAGES OF MEDICAL ABORTION

The pharmacological method of abortion has many advantages, including:

  • high efficiency;

  • the ability to have an abortion in the early stages;

  • no risk associated with anesthesia;

  • the uterus and cervix are not subjected to any mechanical stress, which protects them from the risk of damage;

  • eliminates the risk of developing an ascending infection, inflammatory process in the pelvis, the appearance of adhesions and obstruction of the fallopian tubes;

  • the consequences of the procedure bother the woman much less often than after other methods of termination of pregnancy;

  • Recovery after a medical abortion is faster than with surgery.

A delay in menstruation after the procedure, if it lasts 7-10 days, is considered normal. You can also expect minor delays in the next 2-6 months. The main complication is the complete or partial absence of an abortifacient effect, in which case surgical intervention is resorted to. The issue of terminating a frozen pregnancy in this way is decided individually after a thorough examination of the patient and according to the doctor’s decision. In some cases, additional curettage of the uterine cavity may be required.

HOW IT HAPPENS

The procedure takes a total of at least 12 hours and usually occurs in two stages. At the first stage, the patient is examined to confirm the period. The doctor must also make sure that the woman has no contraindications. No earlier than 48 hours later, the patient takes the required dose of the drug, then remains in the clinic under the supervision of medical staff for about four hours.

The next stage begins on the third day after taking the first tablet, when the patient comes to the clinic again. She is offered to take a drug that helps remove the fertilized egg from the uterine cavity. The drug causes profuse bleeding with clots.

During the second stage of a medical abortion, the patient remains in the clinic for at least two hours. The doctor must confirm that taking the drug allowed to achieve complete removal of the fertilized egg. For this purpose, a control ultrasound examination is required.

A control ultrasound examination is carried out 9-15 days after medical termination of pregnancy.

In some cases, with incomplete rejection of the fertilized egg, hysteroscopy is necessary to avoid the development of endometritis, chronic salpingitis, uterine bleeding and adhesions in the pelvis.

CONTRAINDICATIONS TO MEDICAL ABORTION

Despite the ease of use, the procedure has contraindications. If you have them, do not succumb to the persuasion of unscrupulous doctors from unverified clinics who, bypassing contraindications, still offer to perform abortion with pills.

The list of contraindications includes:

  • suspicion of ectopic pregnancy and pregnancy during the use of intrauterine contraception;

  • diseases of the adrenal glands and liver;

  • long-term treatment with corticosteroid drugs;

  • hemorrhagic diseases;

  • use of anticoagulants;

  • individual intolerance to drugs used for abortion;

  • infectious and inflammatory diseases of the genital organs;

  • inflammatory bowel diseases;

  • existing prosthetic heart valves or previous endocarditis;

  • lung diseases, bronchial asthma;

  • smoking in women over 35 years of age.
