Bloom's Taxonomy for Learning Objectives

Published on Mar 14, 2016

This Haiku Deck is a guide for writing and/or reviewing learning objectives. It uses Bloom's Taxonomy Revised as a framework and the SMART principles of writing objectives.

PRESENTATION OUTLINE

Bloom's Taxonomy

Learning Objectives & Target Thinking

What is a learning objective

supposed to do?

When writing or reviewing learning objectives...

Think SMART

How do you get SMART?

Know your learners

Specific

Does the objective establish an expectation for something the learner should know or be able to do?

Measurable

Can you assess the learner's performance of the objective?

Achievable

Does the objective ask learners

to recite what they know?

Does the objective ask learners

to learn something new?

Do they have the foundation to achieve the objective?

Or, is the objective too steep?

Relevant

Does the objective connect to a course goal?

Or is it an add-on?

Targeted & Time-bound

How good a fit to the course goal is this objective?

Can it be achieved within the time allotted?

OK. So, what should we look for?

Look for the targeted cognitive engagement of the learner

In other words: What kind of thinking should the learners be doing?

This brings us to Bloom's Taxonomy

Does the objective seek to determine...

What the learner already knows?

Does the objective ask the learner...

to demonstrate understanding?

Does the objective ask the learner to...

APPLY KNOWLEDGE?

Does the objective ask the learner to...

ANALYZE something?

Does the objective ask the learner to...

EVALUATE something?

Does the objective ask the learner to...

SYNTHESIZE what they've learned?

Does the objective ask the learner to...

CREATE something new?

To be SMART...

We then want to ask...

Does the objective communicate accurately

what we want learners to know or do?

Is that what we want the learners

 to know or do?

Is it too much to expect

these learners to know or do this right now?

Is the activity going to help the learners

achieve the objective?
