THEODORE HERTZL
- Born in Budapest in 1860
- Secular
- Studied law at University of Vienna
- Became a writer, playwright, and journalist
- Father of political zionism
UNIVERSITY OF VIENNA
- First experiened anti semitism while studying there
- Saw Jewish problems as a social issue
- Wrote "The Ghetto"(1894)
THE GHETTO
- Assimilation and conversion rejected as solutions
- Hoped play would lead to debate and solution
- Solution through mutual respect between christians and jews
-Captian Alfred Dreyfus (jewish officer in french army) was falsely accused and convicted of treason "Death to the Jews"
- Hertzl witnessed DA as a newspaper correspondence
- decided Jews needed a country of their own to reduce tension and bring and end to anti semitism
- Published in 1896
-Jews could gain acceptance in the world only if stopped being seen as a deviation among nations
-emphasized Jews are one people
-their plight becomes a positive force through the establishment of a Jewish state guaranteed in public law
- met with enthusiasm by Jewish masses

- Jewish social utopia is palestine
- Ideas rejected in Western Europe
-Basle, Switzerland
-Founded Zionist movement
- first organized body representing Jews of the Western world in 2000 years
-first time Jews from different nations met with a political agenda
- mass support from Jews of East Europe and Russia
- sought to: "establish home for Jewish in Palestine secured under public law"
- Hertzl became the first president of the Zionist Organization
- " at Basle, I founded the Jewish State... If not in 5 years, then certainly in 50, everyone will realize it."
- resolve to set up facial institutions to carry idea forward as well
- motto of Zionist movement coined by Hertzl "If you will, it is no fairytale"
