WHEN YTTRIUM WAS DISCOVERED

IT WAS DISCOVERED IN 1794.

WHO DISCOVERED YTTRIUM

JOHAN GADOLIN A FINNISH CHEMIST DISCOVERED IT.

WHERE IT CAN BE FOUND

  • In the Earth's crust
  • In moon rocks
  • And in many rare earth elements

Yttrium properties:
Yttrium is a soft, bright, shiny, silvery metal. It can also be a black dust with little shine. It has a melting point of about 1500°C and a boiling point of 3336°C.

HOW IS YTTRIUM USED
1) It is used in making red phosphors for color television picture tubes. 2) It is also used to make microwave filters. 3) It is also used to make alluminum and magnesium stronger.

Two Yttrium Isotopes
1) Yttrium-90 a radioactive isotope used to treat many kinds of cancer; radiation from the isotope kills cancer cells
2) Yttrium-89- is the naturally occurring yttrium

Why I Chose Yttrium:
I chose yttrium because I wanted to learn about an element that seemed interesting and that I have never heard of before.
