"YOU CAN'T STOP A TORNADO WITH ALL YOUR MIGHT, BUT YOU CAN ALWAYS BE PREPARED BEFORE IT STRIKES"

HOW TO KNOW WHEN THE THE STORM IS OCCURRING

"IT IS IMPORTANT TO KNOW WHEN TO TAKE ACTION BEFORE THE TORNADO APPROACHES"

THE STORM'S OCCURRANCE

  • A tornado siren,activated by the police ,fire department ,or emergency personal,will be heard loudly and clearly to indicate that a tornado is about to strike your area.
  • When the siren is heard, turn on any radio station, or TV to get more information from the local media. Stay tuned to the media continuously for whether forecasts

PROTECTING YOURSELF AND YOUR FAMILY BEFORE THE STORM APPROACHES

"IT IS IMPORTANT TO HAVE TO HAVE BACKUP PLANS BEFORE THE TORNADO STRIKES"

AT HOME

  • If you are at home when the tornado is near and have no escape route, then run for the basement or the lowest floor of your house.
  • If not, then hide in the bathtub of your washroom.
  • Try to stay away from rooms with high roofs and stay away from the corners of your room
  • If possible, approach your storm cellar immediately depending on the tornado's distance. Your storm cellar is the most safest place to hide during a tornado storm.

AT WORK OR SCHOOL

  • Try to stay away from rooms with high roofs, like the gymnasium, or a factory.
  • Hide in a locker, or under a strong and heavy piece of furniture so you can hold on to it.
  • If you are in a building, then run to the lowest level of the building.
  • If your storm cellar is near, then rush to it immediately depending on the distance of the storm.
  • Again, your storm cellar is the safest place to hide

IN THE CAR

IN THE CAR

  • Warning: do not try to drive faster than the tornado to get away,because the tornado could change directions quickly and toss you and your car in the air. If you have a safe distance from the tornado, then do so.
  • If not, then find a storm cellar closest to you and seek shelter immediately
  • You could also hide yourself in a ditch or a hole
  • If you are near a bridge when the tornado is occurring then go under it

GETTING PREPARED BEFORE THE STORM STRIKES

"IT IS IMPORTANT TO BE PREPARED FOR THE STORM, AND TO KEEP EXTRA SUPPLIES IN YOUR STORM CELLAR"

HERE ARE THE FOLLOWING SUPPLIES YOU SHOULD KEEP/TAKE TO YOUR CELLAR:

  • Battery powered radio
  • Flashlight
  • Extra batteries for the radio and flashlight
  • Prescription medications-if anyone in the family has allergies or is taking any type of prescription medication, make sure they bring the medications with them
  • First Aid Kit-somebody must be responsible for accessing the first aid kit when necessary
  • Non perishable items such as crackers (three day supply)- make sure there is an extra supply of food and water for each person
  • Water(1 gallon per person)

  • Helmets and extra warm clothes- make sure everyone in the family including yourself, is wearing appropriate clothing for the storm
  • Personal documents and valuable items in case of home damage
  • Cellphones, chargers and all devices-make sure you and your family have phone or a way to contact outside the cellar in case of emergency
  • Take a hammer to keep the debris out from the corners

Most importantly,
-If you have a baby with you, make sure to pack a separate handbag for them that can easily be carried. Remember to include diapers, baby food, and extra warm clothes.
-Make sure everyone stays calm during the storm
-make a backup plan with your family is made, so everyone knows what to do and what to get. Everybody should know who is responsible for what .
-make sure all the children know what a tornado is and know exactly what to do when they see one approaching.
-Discuss the escape routes with your family and be prepared to do your job so everything is in order and is safely done.

RECOVERING FROM THE DAMAGES ONE THE STORM HAS PASSED

ONCE THE STORM HAS PASSED,

  • Listen to the local media on your radio for updates and for clarification that the storm has passed.
  • If you were at home during the storm, check all gas, electric and water lines. If there is a leakage then shut off the main valve immediately.
  • Report all the damages to your utility company.
  • Watch out for any broken glass, or nails for protection.
  • If anyone is injured, then get the first aid kit immediately and send them to the hospital

PREPARING FOR THE NEXT STORM

" IT IS IMPORTANT TO PREPARE FOR THE NEXT STORM AS WELL AS KNOW HOW TO REPEAT YOUR IMPORTANT DUTY SO EVERYONE STAYS SAFE"

TO PREPARE FOR THE NEXT STORM,

  • Replace all items in your storm cellar so it is loaded with useful supplies once again, and is ready for the next storm
  • Check your first aid kit so it is ready for the next time
  • Discuss a plan with your family for next time so everybody is fully prepared for when the storm strikes
  • Make sure the baby's handbag is filled and ready once again
  • Replace all items in your handbag and remove items you have already used so the bag is ready for next time a tornado hits your area
