Bituminous coal

  • Location: Yeongheung Island, about 40km from Seoul
  • Resource used to generate electricity: Bituminous coal
  • Imports Bituminous from (not in Korea):
  • Austrailia (37%), China (4%), Indonesia (35.5%), Canada (9.3%)
  • Russia (7.5%), U.S. (2.5%), etc (4.2%)

Bituminous coal

  • Primary consistuents are maceral (coal component):
  • (vitrinite & liptinite)
  • carbon content: 60-80%
  • rest composed of:
  • water, air, hydrogen, sulphur

Resource used

  • 150,000 ton & 200,000 ton ships
  • coal yard -- 600,000 tons
  • Unit 1 & 2 = 2,415 ton/h  x  2
  • Unit 3 & 4 = 2,637 ton/h  x  2

Electricity generated

  • 20% of electricity of metropolitan seoul
  • Unit 1 & 2 = 800MW  x  2
  • Unit 3 & 4 = 870MW  x  2
  • Photovoltaic power plant = 1,400 MWh
  • hydro power plant = 11,892 MWh

Environmental Effect

  • generates 1.1million tons of coal cinders
  • -- material produced from incomplete combustion of coal
  • 37% of coal cinders recycled
  • expected to raise to 95% of recycling rate
  • lifespan of landfills will be expanded to 70 years
