The story is a narrative of memory

_Nada_ represents one person's memory of a collective societal experience

So is it history?  Historical memory?

yes and no
"Where does meaning come from in history? Is it the past itself? Is its meaning simply ushered in by the historian. Is the historian merely the midwife to the truth of the past? Or is the historian unavoidably implicated in the creation of a meaning for the past. Does the past contain one true meaning or several? Is there one story to be discovered or several that can be legitimately generated? I think most historians today would agree on the latter analysis."

(Laforet 95)

Consider the political context

hysteria/histéric@; from Greek "hystera" (uterus)

The idea of the invalidity of female speech allowed _Nada_ to avoid censors

(Laforet 112)

"I was feeling a strong emotion. I was remembering the terrible hope, the longing for life with which I had first walked up these same stairs. I was leaving now without having discovered anything that I had naïvely hoped for: life in its bounty, happiness, profound interest, love. From that house on Calle Aribau I was taking nothing. At least, that’s what I believed then..."

"...I raised my eyes toward the house where I had lived one year. The first rays of sunlight were beginning to hit its windows. A few moments later, Calle Aribau and the entirety of Barcelona were behind me."

_Nada_ reflects societal discontent with the freezing of Spanish society after the Civil War.
