They soak up water that might cause floods.
They are like giant sponges.
Marshes, swamps, river , lakes, and bogs are wetlands.
Wetland ecosystems are land areas that hold water most of the year.

Wetlands are mostly found in low areas.
Often wetlands are near streams and lakes.
They are found on every continent except Antarctica.
Many of earth's wetlands are in Canada.
Wetlands are some of the most spectacular, beautiful places on Earth.

LAYERS
Wetlands have three layers.
Cypress , trees and ferns are on top in the forest layer.
Grass and cattails grow in the middle emergent layer.
Water lilies and duck weeds float in the aquatic layer.

PLANTS
More than 5,000 kinds of trees and plants grow in wetland areas.
Grasses are found in marshes.
In bogs, marshes grow wild.
Mango trees grow best in warm, salt water swamps.

ANIMALS
Many kinds of animals live in wetlands.
Birds, bugs and snakes are common in the wetlands.
Ducks and geese make winter homes in the wetlands.
Frogs and toads hop and swim here.
Beavers live in wetlands too.
