  • Lasted 4 days from October 23 1944 to October 26 1944
  • Battle of Leyte Gulf went over 100,000 square miles
  • The Battle of Leyte Gulf was meant to regain control of Pacific Ocean

  • 800 ships and 1800 U.S. Aircrafts used
  • We took out 50% of Japan's naval forces
  • General MacArthur said he would return to free the Philippines
  • First attack by kamikazes

  • Philippines were a key state in war because oil, farm land, airports or storage for ships.

THE BATTLE OF LEYTE GULF

  • 2,800 American soldiers died
  • 12,500 Japanese soldiers died
  • In Battle a total tonnage of 337,000 ships were sunk which is 350 to 500 ships were sunk in total.

  • The Ship Musashi was used during this battle along with its sister ship Yamato.
  • Yamato wasn't as strong as Musashi and it sunk after two hits
  • Musashi endured 17 bombs and 19 torpedos
