when the US entered the war, the allied powers were not strong enough to attack Germany directly. In November of 1942, 100,000 allied troops landed in North Africa.
D-DAY... June 6, 1942 was D-Day. It was the invasion of Normandy. 176,000 troops, 4,000 landing crafts, 600 warships, and 11,000 planes left for the beaches of Normandy.
SERVICEMEN... After Pearl Harbor, thousands of Americans signed up to fight. Over 5 million volunteered for the military during WWII. Another 10 million were drafted.
GOVERNMENT... When WWII began American economy was focused on producing consumer goods. Germany was shocked at how American government transformed the US.
CONSUMERS... Consumers we're hit by shortages of almost everything. Most Americans encouraged each other to "use it up, wear it out, make it do, or do without".
WOMEN ON THE JOB... More than 6 million of the workers at the time were women. Women worked as welders, electricians, and machinists. They became doctors, officers, and taxi drivers.
JAPANESE-AMERICANS... Japanese immigrants to the US we're put into internment camps. They would be there for three years. They were thought of as dangerous after what happened to Pearl Harbor and Americans were suspicious.
MEXICAN AMERICANS... Sergeant José López was called a "one-man army". He defended dozens of Germans for his company. More than 500,000 Latinos served in the military in WWII.
JEWISH AMERICANS… Hitler toke power in 1933. The US was home to 4.5 million Jews. Albert Einstein was one of the 1,000 Jewish refugees. More than 550,000 served in the military in WWII.
