ORIGINS

• The first sub was a three man sub
• Built by a man named wilhelm bauer
• Which sank the first test dive. But was later
• Found while dredging and redesigned for WWI.
• The first sub is now in a museum in Germany.

U BOAT CREATION

• IN 1903 a redesigned model of the sub
• Was made in a dock yard in Germany and only
• One was made. The sub was sold to Russia during
• The russo--japineess war. Another new design was built
• Called the SM U-1 and only one was built.

SM U-1 AND 2

• The SM U-1 was made for war
• And had a double hull and a large
• Engine and came equipped with one
• Torpedo tube as a weapon. The SM U-2
• Was 50% larger and had 2 torpedo tubes.

U BOATS ON THE BATTLEFEILD

• At the start of the war Germany had 29 U boats
• The first week alone they sunk 5 british cruisers.
• On september 5 the first vessel was sunk by a torpedo.
• Many deaths where caused by these u boats.
• Ships started to travel in convoys to try to stop u boats.

U BOATS ON THE BATTLEFEILD

• The unexpecting ship would be sailing
• When all of a sudden a german u boat breached
• The waterline and shot torpedoes out of the hull
• And sunk the ship and leaving no trace.
• The u boat dominates the battlefield.
