  • WWI ended the progressive movement
  • U.S. Stayed out of the war for almost 3 years
  • Camp Jackson was established and Paris island grew to meet the needs of war
  • April 2, 1917: United States declared war

SOUTH CAROLINA IN THE WAR

  • Industrial and agriculture production in the state increased
  • South Carolina's farmers profited from extra demand for cotton
  • Cotton doubled in price during the war

WHAT WERE THE RACE RELATIONS IN THE WAR?

  • Anti-German sentiment led to discrimination against German people and words
  • Even though black soldiers fought for their country, they returned home to Jim Crow segregation
  • African Americans continued to move north to work in factories

WHAT WAS THE HOME FRONT?

  • Changes resulting from the war:
  • Women and blacks got jobs previously held by white men
  • Women's received the right to vote
  • Many people, especially African Americans, left the south for job openings
