WRITING WITH SIMILES AND METAPHORS

Remember, metaphors are not simple comparisons using 'like' or 'as'. One way to write a metaphor is to compare unlike things using 'is' or 'are'.
Steps
1. Write a list of adjectives to describe how the old man feels:
miserable, tired, lonely, sad, cold, forgotten
2. List some unlike things to match these adjectives:
a lifeboat, a deserted island, the last bus home, the Titanic
3. Write a descriptive sentence using metaphor by putting an adjective with an unlike thing.
Example: Danny gazed out at the rain feeling lonelier than a lifeboat lost at sea.

SEE, HEAR, FEEL, SMELL, TASTE, EMOTIONS?

What do you see? eg. swirling water
What do you hear? eg the thump of logs hitting the trees
What do you smell? eg. mud and slime
What do you feel? (touch) the cold sting of pelting rain
What do you taste? eg. brackish water
What do you feel? (emotions) eg desolate

LIST SOME ADJECTIVES AND THINK OF UNLIKE THINGS.

1. List some adjectives.
2. List some unlike things.
3. Match them up using 'like' or 'as'.
4. Write a sentence describing the truck stuck in the mud.

I WONDER WHAT HE'S THINKING ABOUT?

This big green tree frog sat on my pool fence all day in the rain. He didn't move, not even an inch. Maybe he is cold? Or maybe he's waiting for something?

What do you think?
