What/How it Happened?

  • German forces bombard Poland on land and from the air
  • Hitler seeks to regain lost territory and rule Poland
  • Germany used the "blitzkrieg" strategy
  • 1.5 million German troops invaded along 1750 mile border 
  • German Luftwaffe (German air force) bombed Polish airfields
extensive bombing early on to destroy the enemy's air capacity, railroads, communication lines, and munitions dumps, followed by a massive land invasion with overwhelming numbers of troops, tanks, and artillery. Once the German forces had plowed their way through, devastating a swath of territory, infantry moved in, picking off any remaining resistance.

What/How Happened?

  • German warships/U-boats target Polish navy in Baltic Sea
  • 1,200 civilians killed within first 5 minutes
  • Schleswig-Holstein targeted transit depot at Westerplatte
  • 2000 tanks, 1000 planes advanced on Warsaw
  • Encirclement attack

What/How it Happened?

  • Caused UK and France to declare war on Germany
  • Poland surrendered to Germany September 27th 1939
  • After losing 65, 000 troops and many thousands of civilians
  • Germany was assisted by many countries, including Soviet Union
  • Invaded from the east on September 17th

  • Britain and France terminated appesement
  • Britain and France signed Polish Guarentee
  • To protect Poland from German invasion
  • Hitler believe this to be meaningless, therefore, invaded

  • German loss of 16, 000 killed in action
  • 28, 000 wounded
  • 200 aircrafts and 30% of armed vehicles lost

Polish Consequences

  • End of second Polish Republic
  • Polish casualties of 66, 000
  • 694, 000 captured
  • Kept in extermination and concentration camps (457)
  • 17% of the population killed during german occupartion
