Archduke Franz Ferdinand was killed by a Serbian nationalist. This was the spark that led to the war.

Nationalism

A feeling of intense loyalty to ones own country or group
-counties felt superior to all others. This led to over confidence and unwillingness to compromise.

Imperialism

The act of expanding your empire by acquiring new lands. This led to competition and conflicts over new territories.

When two or more countries agreed to help each other in battle.

Militarism

The act of building up your military-
Armies, tanks, weapons...
You needed to build bigger armies to prepare for the war.

Leadership

The leaders of many European countries, were poor, weak, and were unwilling to compromise

New Military Technology

Tanks, airplanes, machine guns, submarines, and poison gas were new weapons to war. These new weapons cause many more people to die.

They were used to create a blockade to stop trade, and to blow up other ships. They were German submarines.

Balance of power

A system that prevented one country from another dominating or becoming too powerful.

Stalemate

A situation where neither side made any military advantages, no side could win a clear victory.

Isolationism

The U.S Policy of not getting involved in another nation's affairs. This lasted for 4 years.

Peace Without Victory

President Wilson proposed a peace settlement to the countries of Europe-
Peace with no one one winning. The idea was rejected, and the war continued.

Lusitania

A British passenger ship that was sank by German U-Boats on its way to England. It was also secretly carrying war supplies to Europe. 128 Americans were killed. This angered the governments do the people of the United States.

Sussex Pledge

Germany's promise to not sink any neutral ship without a warning first. Germany broke this promise and we broke all trade with them.

Zimmerman's Telegram

A telegram proposing an alliance to Mexico against The United States. Mexico was promised land if they helped Germany defeat the U.S, this was the last straw, The U.S declared war against Germany.

It was a draft for 20-30 year olds, they had to all register for army forces.

Countries knew that war was coming, so they made alliances to other countries, to make their military stronger.

N - Nationalism
Nationalism led to over confidence, and unwillingness to compromise. And this led to war.

I - Imperialism
The act of expanding your lands, countries fought over land, and this led to war.

M - Militarism
The act of building up your military. Countries knew war was coming, so they built up their military, (weapons, tanks, and armies.)

A - Assassination
Archduke Franz Ferdinand was assassinated, this made people angry, and was also the spark that led to the war.
