WHAT STARTED THE WAR?

  • European countries made alliances with each other.
  • Militarism built tension.
  • Future Austrian leader Archduke Franz Ferdinand was assassinated.
  • Austria blamed Serbia for assassination and declared war.
  • Alliances with the countries joined war, forming the Allies and Central powers.

WAS THE USA IN THE WAR?

  • The USA wanted to stay neutral.
  • USA sent supplies to both sides.
  • Germany used U-boats to sink ships going to Serbia.
  • Germany wouldn't stop sinking ships.

WHAT WARFARE WAS USED?

  • Trench warfare, when soldiers line up in trenches with weapons.
  • Every time one side gained territory you had to build another trench.
  • Tanks, u-boats, zeppelins, poisonous gas and other things were used.

WHO WON THE WAR?

  • The Allies won when they drove back the Germans with successful attacks.
  • Treaty of Versailles was signed and the war ended.
