NEW ROME

  • This empire was created by Roman leaders in 395, called it Byzantine
  • Come 527, they named their emperor Justinian
  • Justinian created a code that consisted of 4 key points, code included the Code, Digest, Institutes, Novellae
  • Then they created the Hagia Sophia in was bulit in 532
  • After Justinian death the emperor has fallen 565

CHURCH DIVIDES IN 375

  • In 375, Saint Basil wrote rules for the monks
  • In 730, Emperor Leo III banned the use of icons or religious images to aid their devotion
  • Empress Theodora restored icons to Easteren churches
  • Christianity split between Roman Catholic Church and Orthodox Church in the East.
  • Cyril and Methodius invented an alphabet for the Slavic language

NIKA REBELLION IN 532

  • Free entertainment like charoit races and performance act
  • Fans formed groups for the colors of their heros
  • In 532, 2 fan groups had a citywide riot called the Nika Rebellion
  • Belisarius soldiers slaughtered about 30,000 people
  • Justinian wanted to flee, but his wife Theodora urged him to stay

NEW HAGIA SOPHIA IN 532

  • Visitors hailed it as the most splendid church in the Christian world
  • Church of the same name got destroyed in a riot in 532
  • Means holy wisdom in Greek
  • Hagia Sophia led to building baths, aqueducts, law courts, and schools

EMPIRE FALLS IN 1453

  • Before Justinian's death bubonic plague killed the majority of the Byzantine population
  • Faced many challenges against other countries
  • Many countries attacked Byzantium 626- 11th century
  • Used bribes, diplomacy, pooitical marriages, and military power to keep their enemys away
  • By 1350 Constantinople held out for another 100 years because walls, fleet, and stratgetic location

RUSSIA BEGINS IN 800S

  • In the 800s, these Varangians or Rus are like Vikings
  • Russian invited Viking Cheif Rurik to be their king
  • Around 880 from Kiev the vikings could trade for products from distant lands
  • Princess Olga visited Constantinople and converted to Christianity
  • Vladimir liked Byzantine idea of emperor as the supreme ruler of the church

MONGOL'S INVASION IN THE MIDDLE OF 1200S

  • Mongols have beened lured out by the wealth of the cities to the west
  • Mongol Empire spreaded from the Yellow Sea to the Baltic Sea
  • Mongols overran Kiev and rode under Batu Khan in 1240
  • After the fall of Kiev, Mongols ruled all of southeren Russia for 200 years
  • Russians had to give absolute obedience and huge tribute

MONGOL RULE IN RUSSIA FOR 200 YEARS

  • Russians followed Mongols customs
  • Mongols tolerate all religions
  • The Church was like a mediator between the Russians and Mongols
  • Mongols ruled isolated the Russians more than ever
  • This meant that the Russians had little approach to new ideas and inventions

RUSSIA BREAKS FREE IN 1156

  • In 1100, the city of Moscow was founded
  • Prince Ivan earned the title "Grand Prince"
  • Russian and Mongols armies faced on the Ugra River
  • Ivan convinced Patriarch of Kiev to move to Moscow
  • The move to Moscow Ivan used numerous strategies

IVAN III

  • After time both armies turned around and went home
  • Ivan III took the czar, which is a Russian version of Caesar
  • In 1480, Ivan refused to pay the Mongols future tribute
  • Ivan III claimed to make Russia the Third Rome
