What is a World Fair?

A world Fair was an international exhibition intended to show off the achievements of each nation, each one varies in location and theme. World Fairs started in London, running under the title "Great Exhibition of the works of industry of all nations", since then they have grown to form a better tomorrow.

WORLD FAIR FACTS

• The Seattle space needle was built for the 1962 worlds fair, which nearly 10 million people attended
• A worlds fair last for 6 months drawing around 5 million to 73 million visitors
• During the 1893 Chicago worlds fair 27 million attended which was 43% of the United States population

1873 VIENNA

• "Culture and Education"
• 7,255,000 visitors
• 26,000 exhibitors
• Rotunde was the main building which burnt in 1937
• The event led to increased building activity and a new train station in Germany "nordwestbahnhof"
• Adult Tickets cost $.473 and .395 on sundays/festival days

1893 CHICAGO

• "Colombian Exposition" celebrated the 400th year of Columbus' arrive
• 27,291,000 visitors
• The first ferries wheel was built which seated 2,160 passengers at a time
• The fair encouraged the "city beautiful movement" which Urged city's to become beautiful so society would "get in order"
• Daily tickets were $.50 and $.25 for those under the age of 18

1900 PARIS

• "Universal exposition"
• 50,000,000 visitors
• 530 aceres
• 76,112 vendors
• The fair brought fourth the first talking films and escalators
• Tickets were 600 francs
• The Eiffel Tower was created for this event which served as the gate for the event

1904 ST. LOUIS

• "Louisiana Purchase Exposition"
• 19,694,000 visitors
• 1272 acres
• Many famous American foods were introduced such as the hamburger and hotdog, peanut butter and iced tea
• The city was fairly new at the time and many reports flocked there to see, and one report even says that the citizens had more energy than a northern street
• Tickets were $.50

1907 JAMESTOWN

• "Tre-centennial Exposition"
• 2,758,000 visitors
• 367 aceres
• The fair fair was held at the now Hamptons Road Navy Base
• The base has since expanded to 4,000 aceres and was a success in promoting the navy
• Tickets were $.50 adult and $.25 per child

1910 BRUSSELS

• "Exposition Universelle et Internationale"
• 13,000,000 visitors
• 220 aceres
• The expo held many fine arts such as works by Monet, Rodin, and Matisse
• The Hotel Astoria, Brussels was built for fair use and is now a protected monument
• Tickets were $.20

1915 SAN FRANCISCO

• "Panama-Pacific International Exposition"
• 18,876,000 visitors
• 636 aceres
• Many buildings still remain such as the palace of fine arts and Japanese tea house
• The fair created a rebirth for the city which has suffered earthquakes in 1906
• Htickets were $.50

What's happened to the world Fairs?

They haven't gone away but they are no longer held in the United States. Even though the Fairs still go on the themes have changed from space and imagination during the 60s to shifted focus on environment. Another issue with world Fairs is that they don't earn the host country any money, unlike the Olympics. They are still around but in other places, and maybe as soon as 2023 there may be a fair in America.
