Work Permits

A work permit is a legal document that confirms the age of a minor seeking employment, and that the employer, guardian(s), and minor are all aware of child labor laws and regulations.

Who needs one?

• Anyone under 18 needs a permit in order to work in any job, with the exception of agriculture, domestic service work, the YA program, non-profit organizational work, and court-ordered community service.

Why do I even need one?

• Work permits allow the government to protect children from exploitation and from overwork, and is necessary for minors seeking work.

How do I get one?

• Visit your local permit officer, taking the following things with you:
• Your birth certificate or other verification of age
• Your social security card
• A letter from the employer expressing interest to hire, as well as describing job duties and hours of work
• A written parents consent

6. A $10 permit fee (To be reimbursed by your employer by the date of your first paycheck)
