SUMMARY

  • 12 years pass and Cathy is raised at Thrushcross grange by Edgar
  • When Cathy is thirteen Isabella becomes sick and asks Edgar to take linton
  • While Edgar is away Cathy wanders off to Wuthering heights and meets hareton, who is now eighteen.
  • Linton arrives at thrushcross grange very sad and sickly
  • Joseph comes to tell them that Heathcliff demands to take him.

CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT

  • Cathy grew up. Became somewhat spoiled. Very happy and upbeat compared to Catherine. Curious, intelligent.
  • Hareton has grown to be prideful, hot-headed. Has good qualities deep within him. Very bold, brutish
  • Edgar hasn't changed much. Is very lenient with Cathy. Very mild-mannered.
  • Nelly has taken the position of main caretaker for Cathy. Is now Somewhat motherly and more mature.
  • Joseph never changes. Still old as dirt.

SIGNIFICANCE

  • Cathy grows into a child and she meets her cousins Hareton and Linton. These chapters are significant because it develops the character of Cathy and introduces Linton into the story.

  • Contribution to plot Chapter 18 illustrates the level of nurtured Cathy received as a small girl and the level of trust they had with her. Chapter 19 shows the unawareness of Cathy as she did not recognize her own cousin and automatically assumed for him to serve her.
