During the late 1600's a few Village Girls decided to start something called witchcraft. They let it get out of hand and never told anyone for a long time that they weren't telling the truth, causing a lot of trouble around the town.
Witchcraft had gone around for about a year. Everyone who had been accused and in jail were set free. The Massachusetts Colonial Legislature made payments to the families that were witch hunt victims.
Now days, people will agree that a lot of people were accused for no reason. The village girls had pretended to be possessed, most likely for attention. No one new the real reason why.
Around 1939, Gerald B. Gardner started a group with people who called themselves Hereditary Witches. They said that they were practicing the old religion, since it had been passed down to them through family for many generations. Through the 1950’s Gerald published books about the older religious ceremonies of Witchcraft.
He was afraid that witchcraft was going to die out so he wanted to make the book public. He gathered as much information he could get and added material from certain sources like European Folklore, Eastern Magic, and the writings of his friend Aleister Crowley.
Summary- The judges/jury mostly accused a lot of innocent people because they either didn't like them or they wanted something of theirs. Like money, land, etc.
