A wildfire is a large, destructive fire that spreads quickly over woodland or brush.

Wildfires are usually triggered by lightning or accidents.

Wildfires can be helpful. They return nutrients to the soil by burning dead or decaying matter. They also act as a disinfectant, removing disease-ridden plants and harmful insects. Wildfires allow sunlight to reach the forest floor, making a new generation of seedlings grow.

There are prescribed burning. Prescribed burnings help reduce the catastrophic damage of wildfires on our lands and surrounding areas.

Wildfires move fast and burn everything in their paths, reducing places animals can live.
