Benifits of Volunteering

  • Volunteering can provide a sense of purpose (Greenfield and Marks, 2004)
  • Out of 13.3 million youth, 59.3% volunteer an average of 3.5 hours per week, versus 49% of the adult population volunteer an average of 4.2 hours.
  • Youth who volunteer are more likely to do well in school, graduate and vote.
  • Youth who volunteer just one hour or more a week are 50% less likely to abuse alcohol, cigarettes, become pregnant, or engage other destructive behavior.
  • Teens say the benefits received from volunteering are: Learning to respect others; learning to be helpful and kind; learning to understand people who are different; developing leadership skills, becoming more patient, and better understanding of citizenship.
  • Young people involved in community service are more likely to have a strong work ethic as an adult.
  • Youth who volunteer gain important job skills and experience, while exploring career options.
  • Young volunteers expand their social circle and enhance their social awareness.

1st step: Pick a Place

tip: Pick a place that interest you. If you hate books don't go the libary *FACE PALM*

  • A 3TR classroom at AHS or Middle School
  • Ames Park Clean Up Crew
  • Local Libary
  • Local Carity

2nd Step: Pick a Time

Tip: Don't pick a time that you know that will be a conflict with school/work/social life.

3rd Step: Contact the Place

tip: know who you are calling the name and phone nummber/email

What should I say?

  • State your name
  • Ask if _____ is there
  • Tell them about why you wanna do this
  • set up a date/time
  • Ask them what you need to wear/bring

4th Step: SHOW UP ON TIME

tip: show up 15 minutes early if this is your 1st time with this voleenteering job
