Humans are killing sharks

  • Every year, humans kill approximately 1 million sharks from a process called finning
  • Finning involves slicing off a shark's fin, then throwing the still-living shark back into the ocean
  • the fins are used to make shark fin soup

Sharks Contribution to Ecosystem

  • maintain species below them in the ecosystem and serve as an indicator for ocean health
  • help remove the weak and sick and keep balance with competitors helping to ensure species diversity

Sharks help fight diseases

  • humans and sharks have an immune system that relies on antibodies to fight diseases
  • sharks contain the substance urea (destabilizes antibodies)
  • sharks have developed molecular adaptations to keep urea from making them vulnerable to disease
  • researchers are now applying this to human antibodies

known as the monster of the sea

  • because of movies and stories of attack, sharks have became one of the most feared creatures on earth
