WHAT WE HAVE IS 1MBPS
That's slower than the lowest speed by Time Warner Cable
The download speed is around 1.184 Mbps or megabytes per second
The upload speed is around 0.448 Mbps
This causes what you've seen as a conflict for data transfer especially over wifi
Our devices will battle for what little bandwidth we have

The desktop alone could be so much more
It could be several servers, for others and ourselves
Host servers for games I could play with my friends
Gather television shows from the internet for free
Download mass amounts of content for almost anything
It could even mine for bitcoins or other forms of money
