Why it is important to continuously improve your own work

Why it is important to continuously
improve your own work

Stewards should endeavour to keep
themselves updated about their role,
better themselves and improve their own
work through a continuous professional
development (CPD) plan, which is
contained in their training records. CPD
can be defined as –

A continuous improvement cycle,
in which employees/stewards
identify new training opportunities.
After completing their training, the
steward/employee analyses what
they’ve learnt and how they can
utilise their news skills at work. Then
they should consider what new
training can be undertaken next.

CPD is self-directed, meaning the steward
is in control of their own improvement
and learning, and this can sometimes
be difficult for people who struggle to
motivate themselves. However, for the
people who follow a CPD plan there can
be a huge sense of achievement, and it
can also lead to new opportunities in their place of work.

Once started, it is important
to maintain momentum, and to plan what
needs to be achieved within
a set timescale to meet
personal goals. CPD can
take many forms, from
attending training courses
and workshops, to reading
books and journals.
