The Washington Local School District is my home. It’s where my three children were raised and it’s where they reached many milestones – all culminating with their graduation from Whitmer High School. As a former board of education member with nearly ten years’ experience, I consider so many of the former students and parents I have had the opportunity to work with previously to be extensions of my own family; and as they continue the proud tradition of raising their own children and grandchildren in this district, I want to do everything I can to help provide them with the best education and opportunities possible. It is after much thought and consideration that I feel compelled to recommend Lisa Canales as the Democratic candidate for Washington Local School Board. Ms. Canales would make an excellent addition to the School Board because of her past experience as President of the Washington Local Board of Education, her leadership in the Point Place Lighthouse/ Gateway Project during which she worked with elected officials, community leaders, and citizens to develop the shoreline of her local community, and for her commitment to public service. Her leadership in the Point Place and Shoreland Community should also be noted. She was the first Hispanic woman to serve as President of the Point Place Business Association and founded the A.N.G.E.L.S. Outreach Project, a program that provides food baskets for needy families during the holiday season. She has also worked on behalf of National Alliance on Mental Illness to promote mental health awareness.

It was at that time, when all hope seemed lost, that she turned to prayer – asking God to send his angels to protect her baby girl. Angel Mia was born healthy despite suffering an umbilical cord prolapse. From that day forward, Lisa made a promise to God that she would dedicate her life to community outreach.
Founded in 1995, Area Neighbors Getting Envolved Lovingly and Spiritually (A.N.G.E.L.S.), delivered its first food baskets to families in need – Angel Mia was six weeks old. Today, the
organization has delivered hundreds of food baskets to families in need of assistance every Easter, Thanksgiving, and Christmas.
On May 2, 2014, the nonprofit organization will conduct its first major fund raiser – “City of The A.N.G.E.L.S.” One hundred percent of the funds raised will go back to the community and will help A.N.G.E.L.S. expand its outreach efforts to provide hope and assistance to more families than ever before.
