PRESENTATION OUTLINE

TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD BY HARPER LEE

"HOW IS WHITE PRIVILEGE STILL ALIVE TODAY? "

FIFTY SHADES OF BEIGE

White privilege is evident in everyday aspects of our lives. It is much easier for people of a lighter complexion to find foundation and powder, panty hose, nude color under garments, and bandages to match their skin color. When shopping for haircare products, people who are not of African American decent have no trouble finding what they need, while others need to look in the "ethnic products" isle. These are just basic examples of white privilege as other areas have more serious effects.

Generally, a white person's skin color does not shape one's prejudice of their financial responsibility, style of dress, public speaking skills, or job performance. "People do not assume that I got where I am professionally because of my race (or because of affirmative action programs)." , stated Jennifer R. Holladay. White people are also less likely to be harassed or pulled over by the police and other law enforcement agencies because of their race.
A recent study conducted by Princeton University found that a white male with a drug felony on his record was twice as likely to receive a callback from a potential employer than a black man with a clean record.

"When I am told about our national heritage or “civilization," I am shown that people of my color made it what it is.", stated Jennifer R. Holladay. The standard textbooks that schools use reflect white people and their contributions to the world. The white race is widely represented and celebrated in monuments.
"Since white folks have been in control for so long, we have determined what is valuable or interesting or useful in terms of education", stated Jennifer R. Holladay. For example, Arizona has banned Mexican-American Studies curriculum in Tucson.

The "doll test" research study has been done on children from the age of three to seven to identify the race of the dolls and their characteristics. According to the results, light skins is viewed as more desirable than dark skin. The majority of the children assigned negative qualities to the black doll when asked questions such as "Which doll is the ugly doll?" and "which doll is the dumb doll?". Seventy-five percent preferred the white doll. The results demonstrate how people of color are portrayed in society along with the negative stereotypes attached.

"Many doors open for certain people through no virtues of their own", stated Peggy McIntosh, a white activist for women of color. Explaining white privilege makes one accountable. Nobody gets to choose their race. Even if a white person does not contribute to the racist agenda, it is still their responsibility to be educated on the subject by listening and broadening their own experience.
