AFRICA

  • Subsahran africa is the most impacted by migration because majority of migration flows are refugees
  • Because of the war in Sudan, there have been more than 5 million people who are displaced
  • 1.6 million refugees moved from Sudan to Uganda
  • There are more than 1.5 million refugees that have moved into a smaller areas because of civil wars
  • In the northern part of Sudan, the arab muslim government started genocide and counter migrations

  • The gulf war of 1991 and war in Iraq, caused most of the refugees that moved into this region
  • As many as 2.5 million Kurdish people of Iraq were in the refugee movement
  • Kurdish people waere displaced in places like turkey and Iran seeking safety from the war back home
  • When the Soviet Union invaded Afganistan, it forced people westward to get away (6.2 mil refugees)
  • The Taliban started counter migration against refugees that had left and were coming back

  • Pakistan froced Afghanistan's emigrants
  • Soviet intrusion lead to over 3 million refugees
  • Allied relation against terrorist bases, Oct 2001
  • Sri Lanka civil war had big effect, from demands by minority
  • Sinhalese - dominated and destroyed islands costing 10,000s lives, 200,000 unreported

  • Indochina was the 20th century most desprare refugee crisis
  • 1-2 million people fled to Vietnam
  • After war, Cambodia had produced an exodus of 300,000 refugees escaped from their country
  • Never-ending cycle of violence fled to Thailand's borders, Myanmar, largest refugee camp
  • After tsunami & 2008 cyclone many died, Myanmar closed society is hard to structure

EUROPE

EUROPE

  • Collapse of Yugoslavia in 1990s made largest refugee crisis in Europe since end of WWII
  • There was a total of 6,056,000 refugees
  • Dayton Accords - the cessation of armed conflict and implementation of a peace agreement
  • UNHCR still reports as many as 1.6 million internal refugees
  • These are people who are unable to return home or are dislocated

OTHER REGIONS

  • The number of refugees and internally displaced persons in other geographic realms is much smaller
  • Only columbia in the Western Hemisphere has a serious internally displaced person problem (2-3 million)
  • This is caused by the country's cronic instability associated with its struggle against narcotics
  • Those who abandon their familiar surroundings because of unlivable conditions perform on act of desperation
  • The Earth's refugees and internally displaced person populations are a barometer of the world's future
