Abstract
From online news to carpark chats, people could be forgiven for thinking that Digital Technologies is all about teaching coding. This workshop explores the exciting and varied subject matter in the Technologies Learning Area in the Australian Curriculum. It is an introductory master class for primary teachers who are not familiar with the two subjects Digital Technologies and Design and Technologies. The workshop takes participants through the essence of this learning area from the early years through to upper primary and considers the ways in which we can build student capacity and knowledge of Technologies. The workshop engages participants in student centred exploratory activities that can be achieved in no tech, low tech and high tech environments.

Data

Collecting, analysing, managing and representing
Sounds, numbers, images and text are all data.

What data is needed to solve the problem?

What can be ignored and what is essential?

We'll come back to this at the end - review our data

Computational Thinking

Defining, designing, implementing, evaluating
Computational thinking is a way of solving
problems, designing systems, and understanding
human behavior that draws on concepts
fundamental to computer science.

To flourish in
today's world, computational thinking has to be a
fundamental part of the way people think and
understand the world. Carnegie Mellon

A problem-solving method that involves various
techniques and strategies that can be
implemented by digital systems. Techniques and
strategies may include organising data logically,
breaking down problems into parts, defining
abstract concepts and designing and using
algorithms, patterns and models. ACARA
