PRESENTATION OUTLINE

STEAMPUNK

WHAT IS IT?

WHAT IS STEAMPUNK ANYWAYS?

  • Steampunk is an alternative history concept wherein, during the Victorian era, steam became the dominant source of power instead of electricity
  • Everything is mechanical rather than electrical, so aesthetically it's grungy and metallic, with lots of gears, wires, etc.

RUGGED vS. REFINED

  • There are different styles under the larger steampunk umbrella.
  • Some steampunk appears more rugged, influenced by styles you might see in westerns, or pirate films.
  • Some steampunk is more strictly victorian in style, with a more refined look.

WHAT sTEAMPUNK iSN'T:

  • Dieselpunk
  • Decopunk
  • Cyberpunk
  • Etc, etc, etc

Dieselpunk focuses on diesel fueled engines and fits into the early 20th century, especially the World Wars.

Decopunk occupies the same period as dieselpunk, but focuses on art deco styles and is lighter and more hopeful in comparison to the postmodern themes of dieselpunk

Cyberpunk is futuristic rather than historical, and deals with anarchist ideas in technologically advanced society

NOTES:

  • Steampunk as a fashion style is often part of a larger culture, which is becoming more mainstream.
  • There are also other "Punk" styles, similar to but separate from Steampunk.
  • Steampunk is generally considered to be a science Fiction concept, as well as alternate history.

  • The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen
  • Sherlock Holmes (Robert Downey JR)
  • Firefly
