MOLLUSCA

  • Largest marine phylum
  • Comprising of 23% of all named marine organisms

PHYLUM

  • Molluscs are one of the biggest phyla
  • Composed of three different classes
  • Bivalve, gastropod, and cephalopod

CHARACTERISTICS

  • All have soft body containing visceral mass, a foot, and a mantle
  • The mantle secretes hard shell
  • Usually have a radula

BIVALVE

  • Clams, oysters, mussels, and scallops
  • These account for 7500 of the species
  • Their name comes from the 2 valves which the shell is divided
  • Lack defined heads though eyes may be present

GASTROPOD

  • Snails, whelks, periwinkles,abalone, and slugs
  • Largest group at about 37500 living species
  • Have either single shell or no shell
  • Live in salt and freshwater and also on land

CEPHALOPOD

  • Are the most evolutionary advanced animals to be found in invertebrates
  • 600 living species in this strictly marine class
  • Octopus seldom reach 30 cm giant squids up to 6 meters not counting tentacles
