ANADIPOLIS

  • - repetition of a prominent and usually the last word in one phrase
  • "Now"
  • He used this to show that justice needed to be established and it
  • helped people understand that something needed to be changed.

METAPHOR

  • - a figure of speech in which something is described as though it were something else
  • "No time to engage in the luxury of cooling off or to take the tranquilizing drug of gradualism"
  • He used this to say that you can't just sit around and do nothing & this got people to get up
  • and start being productive.

PARALLEL STRUCTURE

  • - a grammatical or structural similarity between sentences or parts of sentences
  • Sentences 4-6
  • He did this to use repetition & to prove a valid statement, this made people realize he was
  • right.

ANAPHORA

  • The repetition of the same word or group of words at the beginning of a series of clauses or sentences
  • "Now is the time..."
  • He uses this to show that something needs to be done & that actions need to be made immediately
  • & this made people actually productive.

ANTITHESIS

  • Two opposing ideas found side by side to help bring attention to a message by the author
  • Sentences 3 and 4
  • Paragraph 6- "The sweltering summer of the Negro's legitimate discontent"..."invigorating autumn of freedom and equality."
  • He uses this to show that nothing is being done, but something needs to get started to end
  • discrimination.

ALLITERATION

  • - the beginning of several consecutive or neighboring words have the same sound
  • "Sweltering summer"

HYPERBOLE

  • - obvious & intentional exaggeration
  • "It would be FATAL for the nation

LOW DICTION

  • - the slang-sounding choice of words and their effect on the piece
  • "Needed to blow off steam..."

THE BOLD WORDS AND THEIR DEFINITIONS

  • Hallowed- regarded as holy; venerated; sacred
  • Desolate- barren or laid waste; devastated
  • Fatal- causing or capable of causing death; mortal
  • Tranquility- quality or state of being tranquil; calmness; peacefulness; quiet; serenity

#5 SUMMARY

  • In paragraph five he says that nothing is being done to stop the discrimination of Negros and that
  • something needs to be done immediately. He says that now is the time to act, now is the time to stop
  • racial injustice, and that we all need to get along.

#6 SUMMARY

  • He is saying that it would be bad, even disastrous to the nation if they just
  • overlook this matter. He is saying not to underestimate the determination of the
  • Negros and that there will be a rude awakening if the country returns to business as
  • usual. There will be not peace or rest in America until they are granted their rights.
