The role of a generalist T&L Coach is relatively new. This type of role was usually more common in Elementary School, focusing on Literacy. Then we had a variety of terms to define a Technology Coach, or Tech Integrator / Coordinator, etc.

A generalist T&L Coach is a specialist in teaching and learning strategies, able to support any subject area. WHAT IS A TEACHING & LEARNING

PARTNER

A THINKING
Because a T&L Coach is a learning specialist, he/she can focus on strategies while the teacher provides the content expertise. It is a perfect partnership!

IDEAS

A SOURCE OF
A T&L Coach has an overall view of the school and/or the Division, because he/she works with many teachers. The T&L Coach accumulates a wealth of ideas that can be shared with every teacher. A good T&L Coach also encourages and facilitates teacher-teacher sharing.

STUDENT DATA ANALYSIS

PARTNER
A T&L Coach also has to be a specialist in data analysis, involving either outside school tests (like MAP, WIDA, IB, etc) and internal classroom assessments.

The analysis of student data is at the core of student-centered coaching as it focuses on student improvement, instead of focusing on "fixing" teachers.

Differentiation

SUPPORT FOR
A T&L Coach can be a powerful partner, observing students in the classroom and supporting the collection/analysis of classroom data (assessments). Based on such student-centered type of information, the T&L Coach can help the teacher in developing and applying differentiation strategies to target students' needs.

another set of eyes

for curriculum planning
A T&L Coach usually works closely to a Curriculum Coordinator, supporting teachers and teams in curriculum development and documentation.

A proper coaching cycle with a single teacher or teacher team involves looking at the learning targets defined in the curriculum and selecting the targets in which students need improvement. This may also involve redesign of a learning Unit or an assessment and review of curriculum documentation.

a professional learning

FACILITATOR
T&L Coaches support teacher Professional Development,by constantly sharing resources, ideas, PD opportunities, or facilitating teacher-teacher sharing and designing/running PD sessions.

T&L Coaches have to be in constant contact with administration to synchronize goals and efforts.

NOT AN EVALUATOR

A COACH IS
The T&L Coach does not have an evaluative role. He/she is the coach on the side, always supporting teachers in achieving the goals defined with their Principal.

A good T&L Coach is always vigilant about confidentiality and strives to focus on teacher needs.

NOT A SUBJECT EXPERT

A COACH IS
A T&L Coach has to emphasize the teacher expertise and educate everyone in the school about the role of a learning specialist. It takes time to generate and share successful coaching experiences within the school to help everyone understand how such specialist-subject expert partnership can work.

REFLECTIVE PRACTICE

A COACH IS A SUPPORT FOR
Ultimately, a T&L Coach supports teachers in self-reflection. For this reason, coaches need to develop questioning techniques that make implicit ideas explicit and connect those ideas to achieve selected goals.
