What is Opium?

a reddish-brown heavy-scented addictive drug prepared from the juice of the opium poppy

  • 13 opium factories in city
  • Lots of stores sold it in tins, like you would buy cigarettes now.
  • Opium dens were found throughout Chinatown.
  • People smoked in the opium dens

Who used it?

  • It was considered mostly a Chinese vice
  • Non-Chinese used it too though
  • Newspapers reported all types of people in Opium dens
  • Including women and teenagers

As a Medicine

  • Also used in some western medicine
  • Laudanum (opium and alcohol)
  • Soothe pain or help to sleep
  • People that used it as medicine became addicted without ever going to a den

Laws around Opium

  • Import duties on raw opium were implemented by Government
  • Annual license fees
  • 1908 Opium Act was passed
  • 1911 Opium and Narcotic Drug Act
  • Controlled drug and substances act is the current law governing.
