Fretwell's Idea

Scientist, Dr. Fretwell, came up with the idea to track the southern right whale population by satellite. He argued that the images taken by satellite would be more accurate, cover a wider area, and would be less time-consuming.

Beginning their Research

Dr. Fretwell and his colleagues purchased an image displaying the area in which Southern Right Whales are known to breed and raise their young. The researchers looked at the same image in different wavelengths and were able to spot 77 probable whales and 13 whale-shapes underwater. Fretwell's idea was a success!

Reflection

Although this satellite system is far from perfect, it has made a huge impact on whale research and has increased our knowledge about whales.

“The key is not the size of the animal but how much it stands out.” - Dr. Fretwell
