JOB DESCRIPTION

  • You mainly work with metals
  • There is a lot of heat
  • You can get hurt easily if your not paying attention
  • You will need common sense to be a welder
  • You have to be a perfectionist in welding

  • To install or repair equipment
  • Determines required equipment and welding method for a task
  • Equipment, right equipment for a job and to maintain tools
  • Installation, to be able to install equipment to meet specifications
  • Mathematics, to be able to solve problems

WELDING PROCESSES

  • There is three different types of welding.
  • MIG(Metal inert gas), TIG(Tungsten inert gas), Stick Welding
  • MIG welding is easier and faster to put down welds
  • TIG welding is more delicate and a fine technique
  • Stick welding is a little bit harder to do

EDUCATION AND REQUIRMENTS

  • Some employers look for a high school diploma
  • Other employers look for a certificate from a technical or vocational school
  • To be able to work in confined spaces
  • To work in high elevations
  • To be able to lift heavy pieces of metal

AVAILABLE ADVANCES

  • Skilled welders are already at the top
  • Experienced welders can become supervisors
  • Supervisors can become inspecters
  • Some experienced welders open their own shop
  • Some experienced welders become expert with certain metals

TYPICAL DAY

  • The welder would get a assignment for the day
  • He/she will figure out the best way to get it done
  • Then they set up their welding equipment
  • He/she will start to do the welds
  • When they are done, he/she will check and make sure they are code quality

  • If they are not, they have to do it again
  • If they are, they put the finished product somewhere
  • Clean up their work area
  • Put their tools away
  • Finally they go home
