Culture impacts things that are important because cultures define and determine what things are important to them.Portugal and America are a lot similar and also very different.

Dating/Marriage

Most Portuguese adults expect to marry. Most people marry between the ages of 25 and 30.It isn't uncommon to start having children at age 35 or 40 in Portugal. Some couples move in together before marrying or without ever marrying, and they enjoy most of the same legal rights as married couples. Polygamy is illegal, but it is sometimes secretly practiced in immigrant communities. Gay marriage became legal in 2010 and has become more accepted among younger generations. There are alot more gay marriages.Dating in Portugal is the same as in America.

Music

Fado music is the heart of the Portuguese soul. It is the oldest urban folk music in the world. Most say fado came as a dance from Africa in the 19th century and was adopted by the poor on the streets of Lisbon. Even though Fado defined simply means ‘fate’, the term fado has a deep and complex meaning invested in it by the Portuguese. Fado music often portrays a sense of loss or sadness.

Food Cuisine

Today Portuguese cuisine are different from region to region. But,fresh fish and shellfish are found on almost every single menu at every restaurant. The national dish is "bacalhau," which is dried, salted cod. The Portuguese have been obsessed with this dish since the early 16th century. When their fishing boats reached Newfoundland. The sailors had to salt and sun-dry their fish to make it last for their long journey home.Today there are said to be 365 different ways of preparing this dish, one for each day of the year. The country is full of seafood restaurants, which of course have plentiful lobsters, shrimp, oysters, and crabs.

Herbs and spices such as pepper, saffron, ginger and coriander are well known by the Portuguese. As well coffee, pineapples, potatoes, rice and other ingredients.Portuguese recipes are made by many choices of spices. Southern Portuguese cuisine have Arab and Moorish influences and an old tradition of almond and fig sweets.Breakfast (pequeno almoço) is mostly milk, coffee, bread rolls or toast, butter and jam. Lunch (almoço) is the main meal of the day and can be made easy or slow, while dinner (jantar) is usually served late in the evening
