New York History

  • Founded in 1626 by Peter Minuit
  • The first two Major Cities New York City and Albany
  • Many names before New Yorrk include New Sweden and New Amsterdam

Peter Minuit

  • He was born in 1580 in Wesel, Germany
  • On August 20, 1615 he married Gertrud Raetz
  • In 1625 Peter Minuit was appointed director general of New Netherland.
  • He was a protestant leader of New York Colony
  • his family fled from Germany to The Netherlands for religious freedom

Jobs in the Colony

  • By 1774 3/4 families owned a farm
  • Slaves made tobacco, corn and wheat
  • Many iron mines to send to England
  • Woman's jobs included cooking,sewing and cleaning

  • People are coming here for religious freedom
  • We have some of the most religious diversity
  • most people were catholic

  • Great for agriculture
  • Northern New York has mountains with snow

  • The trip from England to New York took 2 1/2months by boat
  • Most families had 6+ kids
