PRESENTATION OUTLINE

WHAT IS WEATHERING?

-THE BREAKING DOWN OF ROCKS, SOIL, AND MINERALS

TYPES OF WEATHERING

  • Mechanical Weathering
  • Chemical Weathering
  • Biological Weathering

MECHAINICAL WEATHERING

  • -the rocks are broken down into smaller pieces,
  • BUT the chemical composition of the rock remains the same
  • No new substances are produced

EXAMPLE OF MECHANICAL WEATHERING

  • Water sometimes gets into the tiny cracks in boulders
  • If that water freezes, it expands, opening the crack even more and eventually splitting the rock

CHEMICAL

-WHEN ROCKS ARE BROKEN DOWN BY A CHEMICAL CHANGE

EXAMPLE OF CHEMICAL WEATHERING

  • When underground rock decays as a result of chemical weathering
  • It can cause the ground to collapse, creating a sinkhole

BIOLOGICAL WEATHERING

A FORM OF WEATHERING CAUSE BY GROWTH OF ROOTS AND BURROWING OF ANIMALS

EXAMPLE OF BIOLOGICAL

  • Tree roots can grow into fractures in a rock and pry the rock apart
