WHO?
W.C. Handy (William Christopher) was an African American blues song writer and one of the main people who made the blues popular. He began in the early 20th century.

WHAT?
In 1909 Mr. Handy a campaign song named "Mr. Crump" which was named after a candidate. Years later W.C. rewrote the song and named it "Memphis Blues." That was a big hit of his.

WHEN?
W.C. was born on November 16, 1873. At the age of 15 Handy joined a theatrical production that featured African American music. In 1892 he received his degree and shortly after that became a school teacher. Later on he ultimately decided to pursue his music career.

WHERE?
Handy was born in Florence, Alabama. He received his degree from Teachers Agricultural and Mechanical College. In 1918 W.C. resided in New York City.

WHY?
W.C. Handy had a love for music and found it much more enjoyable than teaching. His father was also was a minister that only allowed church music. He wasn't allowed to listen to his choice of music.
