Water Quality

By:Tyler Cleary

Color

  • Every day water you see contains dissolved minerals or suspended materials.
  • an example of dissolved substances tannin.
  • tannin is caused by organic matter
  • Soil runoff produces variety of yellow, red, brown and gray colors.
  • Water rich in phytoplankton and other algae usually appears green.

Dissolved oxygen

  • You cant tell how much oxygen is in the water by looking at it.
  • Rapidly moving water contains lots of oxygen.
  • The dissolved oxygen is breathed by fish.
  • Water at the bottom does not have enough oxygen for fish to survive.

PH

  • Ph is the measure of how acidic/base water is.
  • The range goes from 0-14
  • 7 is nutral
  • Less than 7 is acidity
  • Greater that 7 is a base.

Turbidity

  • is the measure of relative clarity of a liquid.
  • The higher the intensity of scattered light, the higher the turbidity.
  • Turbidity makes the water cloudy or opaque.

Sediment

  • Sediment in rivers can also shorten the lifespan of dams and reservoirs.
  • Rocks as small as tiny clay particles and as large as boulders moved by the water are called sediment.
  • Sediment can make the river muddy.

Hardness

  • The amount of calcium and magnesium determines its hardness.
  • Hard water can damage equipment
  • water hardness varies throughout the united states.
  • Hard water can damage fabrics.

Temperature

  • The temperature can determine the organisms that live in the water.
  • If there are more chemical reactions then the temperature will most likely be higher.
  • The aqua life don't get concerned about the water unless it is changed by human then they start to worry.
